Only the Media Can Make a Political Scandal Out of an Accidental Shooting

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Vice President Cheney accidentally shot Texas lawyer Harry Whittington on Saturday while hunting quail – see previous blog. The media has gone totally absurd making this issue a political scandal. It’s obscene to watch.

Time Magazine at one point on their web site was saying that because of something somebody said, it must mean that Whittington was shot with a rifle not a shotgun. The New York Times has already dug up dirt on Wittington going back to the years when President Bush was Governor of Texas.

What I see as angering the press is they weren’t the first to know. Here’s the timeline. Late on Saturday, the accident occured, around 5:30 p.m. Immediately, first aid was rendered to Whittington while those present waited for an ambulance that was on the 50,000 acre ranch, part of Cheney’s party necessities, to arrive.

According to Katherine Armstrong, owner of the ranch, all attention was focused on the health and well being of Harry Whittington. The ambulance transported Whittington to a small nearby hospital and later was airlifted to a Corpus Christi hospital. While this was taking place, the sercret service personel, notified the local authoriities of the accident. The sheriff of Kenedy County said the party followed the law.

Once those involved knew that Whittington was going to be fine, Cheney and Armstrong discussed the fact that the public had to be made aware of the incident. Armstrong called a friend at the local newspaper on Sunday.

There does seem to be some confusion about who deferred to whom and at what time, but in all honesty, right now I don’t see where there’s as big a problem as the press is making out.

One reporter is relating this incident to examples of Cheney’s persistence is secrecy. I think the majority of the press is out of control on this issue and needs to take a chill pill. I think it is only reflecting their desires to hang a man they don’t like.

If accounts of what transpired during this hunt are accurate, it is extremely unfortunate in more ways than most of us will know that it had to happen. It was a rare and unfortunate set of circumstances. Do any of these rabid media members care about the welfare of Whittington? Do they have a clue as to how Cheney must feel having shot another man? It’s not like Dick Cheney has done this before and it’s run of the mill activity. Give him a break!
What puzzles me is the fact that Cheney was on a 50,000 acre ranch in southern Texas quail hunting and the press wasn’t dogging him. How did Cheney’s ambulance get off the ranch without the press knowing about it? Were they not there?

I don’t want to get into the politics of this issue. I just hope that Harry Whittington makes a complete recovery and the extreme left won’t use this unfortunate event to try to promote their agenda of anti-hunting and anti-guns. I also hope that Mr. Cheney recovers from what obviously must be a traumatic event.
