Ellis Wayne Hunt of Lexington faced a North Carolina Grand Jury on felony charges in the shooting death of Douglass Wayne Murdock of Thomasville. The Grand Jury did not indict him.
On December 28, 2005, Hunt was hunting with his 12-year old grandson in Randolph County. They were riding on a four-wheeled ATV, when the grandfather thought he saw a deer. He told his grandson to shoot and consequently shot Murdock in the chest killing him. Murdock was sitting and was wearing blaze orange. All three were members of the same hunting club.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department presented its case to the Grand Jury which refused to indict Hunt on the charges. He still faces misdemeanor charges of criminally negligent hunting and hunting from a motor vehicle. He is scheduled for court on February 28, 2006, to answer to those charges.

The name of the grandson has not been released nor has he been charged with any crimes.
