Various Species of Wildlife Need Various Habitat

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

One of my favorite outdoor writers, Bill Cochran who writes for the Roanoke Times in Virginia, yesterday had an article called “Taking Back Our National Forests”. His piece describes the evolution of the National Forest as a result of protectionists halting timber harvesting and stopping hunting which are both a necessary part of providing habitat and opportunities for multiple use lands.

Many people don’t realize that some of our National Forests are open to hunting but the opportunities for hunting have dwindled because of poor habitat for certain game species. In other cases, the forests have become overrun with a few species and instead of officials letting hunters better manage herds, they are needlessly slaughtering the animals.

Read what Bill has to say about what has happened and what he thinks needs to be done.
