UN Conference To Ban Guns Dies A Frustrated Death

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The week-long conference held in New York by the UN in an effort to stop illegal gun trafficking was a resounding flop but what else would anyone expect from a useless, corrupt organization that can’t do much of anything at all except pilfer money to line its pockets.

Depending on who you talk to and which bunch of bologna you read from the far right, the far left or somewhere in the middle, you soon learn that there was perhaps several different conferences that took place – each side claiming victory or pointing a finger in disgust.

One thing is clear, the left is unhappy because the UN failed. Aww shucks!

One World United States blames the U.S.

Last Friday, negotiations at the two-week conference broke down at the last minute as the United States and a handful of other nations refused to endorse a document that proposed a wide range of international measures against the illegal trade in guns and other small weapons of various descriptions.

The Houston Chronicle says it had nothing to do with the U.S.

I could go on, but the failure of the conference had nothing to do with gun-owning Americans demanding that their government protect their rights, and everything to do with the complexity of the issue

The bottom line is the conference failed and as a whole this is good for Americans and the world in general. First of all, the lies being spread by anti-gun people and groups plays into the hands of criminals who buy illegal guns. Crooks are going to get guns no matter whether they are legal or not. Insurgents are going to be armed by some terrorist organization or rogue government and creating global laws to ban guns does nothing.

Secondly, the UN has no business attempting to dictate to any country about gun sales and ownership. Each country must decide for themselves. Freedom and democracy is the best form of stopping the need for illicit gun trade.

Third, it is no secret what the ultimate intent of the UN and the gun grabbers is. The article in the Houston Chronicle is typical of those who choose to hide their heads in the sand over this issue and play down what is known to those who cherish their freedom to own a gun.

The goal of the conference was to try to create some kind of international policies to which member states would adhere to make it harder for, say, a Kalashnikov to end up in the hands of an Iraqi insurgent, a Taliban fighter, or a rebel in a war-torn African nation.

What about the second amendment rights of Americans? Well, what about them? That wasn’t the focus of this conference, unless an American is buying a shipment of machine guns from an arms dealer overseas.

There are, however, few DC lobbies quite as capable as the NRA, and so we started hearing about the “UN Gun Grab.” They launched a web site dedicated to the topic, informing site visitors:

Over our 4th of July holiday, while taps is played at Arlington National Cemetery to honor Americans who have sacrificed their lives for freedom…

…These dictatorships, terrorist states and so-called “free” nations of the world plan to meet on our home soil to finalize a U.N. treaty that would strip all citizens of all nations of their right to self-protection, and strip you of your rights under the Second Amendment.

It’s false, of course, but boy, what good punchy copy they wrote. What a great way to get NRA members riled up. Coincidentally (?), the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre has a new book out on the subject, and the site features a handy button to make a donation and get a copy.

Needless to say, the story took off through the right-wing blogosphere, with lots of folks talking about the UN plot to enslave America. A powerful idea gets people talking, even if the idea is a lie.

It’s interesting to look at why the conference went nowhere. Did the US stand up for the second amendment? Well, no, since there was nothing to oppose in that department.

This is the same attitude that has plagued this country for years on gun rights issues and many other Bill of Rights issues – yhe loss of focus of the intent and importance of every bill written into that document. A liberal and progressive society will tell you that life changes and therefore the Bill of Rights should be amended accordingly. Those who treasure and understand how the document works to protect and preserve a free society, work hard to keep the document and working one.

Playing down every attempt no matter its size, to undermine the freedoms of individuals is a recipe for danger. In this case, knowing full well the intent of many in the UN and global communities to rid the world of guns, and then to downplay this conference as having nothing to do with it, is ignorant.

There are two common ways to bring down a country – drop a big enough bomb or undermine its Constitution and take away the freedoms, even if it is one at a time.

One World plays on emotions and believes as does the Secretary General of the UN, Kofi Annan, that guns kill people and if we can just get rid of all the guns, there would be no more killing.

“The problem remains grave,” said Kofi Annan, the UN secretary-general, at the beginning of the conference. “Small arms are easy to buy, easy to use, easy to transport, and easy to conceal.”

“Their continued proliferation exacerbates conflict, sparks refugee flows, undermines the rule of law and spawns cultures of violence,”

If they would open their eyes to the truth, they would see that arming lawful citizens reduces crime but more importantly, the worst offenders of illegal arms trade, murder and recklessness, comes from countries with few freedoms, lack of democracy and little hope that any of it will change.

I think the UN’s job would be a more important one if they focused on helping these dictatorial regimes that keep their citizenry living in poverty and uneducated to rise above that than to spend money, time and resources trying to dictate to world governements about gun ownership.

The bottom line here is to not be drawn into the lies being touted by the media in what the real intent of the UN is on gun control. They have made it public their goals and as Americans we know and understand our rights and our freedoms and we should never allow any organization the opportunity to snatch those away.

Here’s hoping any future anti-gun conference will be a failure too.
