How The Florida Gubernatorial Candidates Line Up on Gun Rights

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Joe Follick of the Herald Tribune has an article this morning that mostly talks about the differences in the two republican candidates for Florida’s governor concerning 2nd Amendment issues – Charlie Crist and Tom Gallagher.

According to Follick, gun owners are lining up on the side of Crist because of the past voting record of Gallagher. It seems Gallagher supported the assault weapons ban and other restrictive measures. But, Gallagher supported the bill that would allow permit holders to keep their guns locked up in the vehicles while at their workplaces. Crist was absent from that discussion and seems to have not taken a stand on the issue.

At the same time, Follick compares the two democratic candidates, U.S. Rep. Jim Davis and Senator Rod Smith. This is how Marion Hammer, president of the United Sportsmen of Florida put it in comparing Davis and Smith.

Hammer said her group might endorse state Sen. Rod Smith, D-Alachua, in the Democratic primary. Smith has been a supporter of legislation favored by gun owners, while his opponent, U.S. Rep. Jim Davis, D-Tampa, has not.

“Jim Davis would be like an F-,” Hammer said of a likely grade from the NRA. “Rod Smith is probably a B or a B+.”
