Researchers from Texas University and Arizona state did determine that Kansas was indeed flatter than a pancake. While the pancake had a flatness of 0.957, the flatness of Kansas measured 0.9997. In the words of the research team, “The degree of flatness might be described, mathematically, as ‘damn flat.’ So, where is the curvature of the Earth is Kansas? Using the Pythagorean theorem, that calculates to an average curvature of 7.98 inches per mile or approximately 8 inches per mile (squared). The distance to the horizon in miles from height of an observer is approximately equal to 1.23 times the square root of the height in feet. EXCEPT in Kansas apparently..
