Genesis: From Beginning to Today. What Got Lost?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Below are several different translations of the same Biblical passages – Genesis 1: 26 and 27. The first is presented, as I found it, in the original (?) Hebrew. Second, is the Mechanical Translation of that Hebrew as presented by Jeff A. Benner. The Mechanical Translation, as we are told, is “a literal translation of Hebrew…word by word. Following that, we can read a Revised Mechanical Translation. And then, I give you the 1599 Geneva Bible. Last, is a modern day translation know as the Living Bible.

What has been changed and what has been lost?

(Note) – I apologize if the Hebrew words did not come through. Sometimes, coding gets confused (as do I).

Genesis 1: 26 – (Mechanical Translation) – and~he~will~Say “Elohiym [Powers]” we~will~Do Human in~Image~us like~Likeness~us and~he~did~Rule in~Swimmer the~Sea~s and~in~Flyer the~Sky~s2 and~in~Beast and~in~All the~Land and~in~All the~Treader the~Tread~ing(ms) Upon the~Land

Genesis 1:27 – (Mechanical Translation) – and~he~will~Fatten “Elohiym
[Powers]” At the~Human in~Image~him in~Image “Elohiym [Powers]” he~did~Fatten At~him Male and~Female and~he~will~Fatten At~them(m)

Genesis 1:26 – (Revised Mechanical Translation) – and “Elohiym [Powers]” said, we will make a human in our image like our likeness and he will rule in the swimmers of the seas and in the flyers of the sky and in the beast and in all of the land and in all of the treaders treading upon the land,

Genesis 1:27 – (Revised Mechanical Translation) – and “Elohiym [Powers]” fattened the human in his image, in the image of “Elohiym [Powers]” he fattened him, male and female he fattened them,

Genesis 1:26 (1599 Geneva Bible) – Furthermore God said, Let us make man in our image according to our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heaven, and over the beasts, and over all the earth, and over everything that creepeth and moveth on the earth.

Genesis 1:27 – (1599 Geneva Bible) – Thus God created the man in his image: in the image of God created he him: he created them male and female.

Genesis 1:26 – (Living Bible) – Then God said, “Let us make a man—someone like ourselves, to be the master of all life upon the earth and in the skies and in the seas.”

Genesis 1:27 – (Living Bible) – So God made man like his Maker. Like God did God make man; Man and maid did he make them.
