SAM Grades, Endorses Some Candidates

*Editor’s Note* – It appears to this editor that these grades and endorsements are based solely on the support of the Second Amendment and voting records on outdoor issues – a very general term. Not that this is necessarily wrong, but readers should understand this concept in making decisions on who to vote for.

In addition, a statement made by SAM I find troubling. “It is our policy to always endorse incumbents with a strong voting record and a good questionnaire even when their challengers receive perfect scores.” Why it is troubling for me is that I am a supporter of term limits. Career politicians are corrupt politicians. Lying, cheating, and stealing are employed in a manner of the ends always are justified by the means – i.e. get reelected. “Always endors[ing] incumbents” is playing into the hands of the corrupt two-party false paradigm system. SAM should endorse candidates based on the lies they are given if that’s the game they want to play.

Press Release from the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine:

To Whom It May Concern:

The Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, ILA is happy to announce our Governor, Congressional, Senate and Legislative endorsements and grades for the important upcoming November election. In the governor’s race we are endorsing Shawn Moody and giving his opponent, Janet Mills a grade of A-. Each candidate gave a strong interview and did extremely well on the SAM ILA questionnaire.

Shawn Moody’s honesty, sincerity and genuine answers were refreshing. He was steadfast in his support of the Second Amendment and his advocacy for our natural resources and sportsmen and women was obvious and we believe he would make a great governor.

Janet Mills gave a terrific interview and the SAM Board appreciated her past support and strong voting record on outdoor issues, particularly firearm rights. She received a grade of A-.

In the Second District Congressional race, the SAM ILA endorsement went to Congressmen Bruce Poliquin. He has been a strong advocate for the Second Amendment, a tireless worker for the Second District, as well as a great congressman. We will work hard for his re-election.

His opponent, Jared Golden, after several requests and follow-ups, did not send in his SAM ILA questionnaire. We have concerns with his D grade from the NRA and his reluctance to inform our members and supporters about his positions on issues ranging from land conservation to hunting and fishing. If he had engaged in a dialogue with our ILA Board of Directors we would have explored his links to a Massachusetts PAC, (https://www.bostonglobe.com/…/QcP9SYTmWVswtPSW51…/story.html) partially funded by gun control advocate, and ex-New York Michael Bloomberg. In addition, he would have had an opportunity to explain why he hired Mr. Bloomberg’s campaign manager, Bobby Reynolds, from the recently defeated Maine referendum campaign to expand background checks to private sales and temporary firearm transfers.

Although we respect his service in the military, we are disappointed he chose not to inform our members on so many important issues effecting the outdoor community.
In the First Congressional District race our organization chose not to endorse a candidate; instead, Mark Holbrook and Marty Grohman each received a grade of A+. Both gentlemen would make great advocates for our outdoor community and hope one of them succeeds in the election. Incumbent, Rep. Chellie Pingree did not send in her ILA questionnaire.

In the U.S. Senate race between U.S. Senator Angus King and Sen. Eric Brakey, the ILA Board decided not to endorse either candidate, but gave Sen. Brakey a perfect grade of A+. Senator King, who has had a long history of supporting sportsmen and women, but recently indicated he was open to further gun control measures like magazine capacity limits, received a B grade.

Attached is a partial list of legislative endorsements as well as A and B grades for the upcoming state races. In the coming weeks we will communicate all the legislative grades and highlight several races around the state where we have two friends and supporters running from both parties.

*It is our policy to always endorse incumbents with a strong voting record and a good questionnaire even when their challengers receive perfect scores. There are times, in certain races, like House District, 106, between Rep. Strom and Stanley Short, where both are great supporters and deserve special recognition.

In our later communications, we will highlight several of these evenly balanced races around the state to give our members and supporters a fair understanding of each legislative race.

Animal Pervert Bill Maher Supports Anti Human Referendum

Another city-dwelling pervert has stepped up to show that humans are scum and animals rules. While visiting Maine and trying to be funny – he claims to be a comic you know – he allowed his name to be placed on a press release that he obviously didn’t write:

““I can’t believe in Maine there are people who put almost 7 million pounds of rotting food, pizza and jelly donuts in their woods each year to lure bears to a bait site, trap them with cruel wire snares and then kill them at close range. How can you call that hunting? That is nothing but an execution. That is almost 70 million pounds of garbage in the last decade alone. Being the only state in the entire country to continue all three of these inhumane hunting practices – I’d say it’s time for a change. Mainers, vote YES on Question 1 and replace those millions of pounds of garbage with the millions of dollars the state will make from tourists going to Maine to see the pristine woods – not garbage dumps.”

This release prompted a statement by “Old Hunter”:

“I can’t believe there are people who put millions of pounds of junk food, drugs and alcohol into their bodies while wasting their lives away sitting on a couch watching some guy who he and others think is funny. These Hollyweird types bait their audience, and trap them behind media machines designed to brainwash the masses, snaring them with cruel statements, lies and human-demeaning comments, causing them to spend millions of dollars buying products that puts even more millions of dollars into this man’s pocket. How can you call that entertaining?”

SAM Won’t Endorse Candidates Instead Offers Grades

According to the Bangor Daily News, the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine (SAM) has decided not to endorse any of the candidates for governor and U.S. Congress. Instead, citing a need to keep together a “fragile” coalition of partners fighting against The Humane Society of the United States’ efforts to effectively ban bear hunting, SAM will, instead offer those candidates willing to fill out a SAM questionnaire a letter grade.

Montana Shooting Sports Association Political Activity

Dear MSSA Friends,

MSSA has a separate “Political Committee,” an entity designed to be able to legally receive money according to federal and state laws and rules, money that may then be used to support or oppose candidates or ballot issues.

You will be interested to know that the MSSA Political Committee yesterday sent 19,000 postcards to registered voters in 18 Montana legislative districts in support of candidates that MSSA has endorsed for the upcoming Primary Election. If we can get these ardently pro-gun candidates elected, we’ll have an improved chance of getting pro-gun legislation through the 2015 Montana Legislature.

This involvement in elections is VERY IMPORTANT. It lets candidates and legislators know that MSSA is a serious player in the political arena. Because if this, we get much more traction in Helena than we would if we were not active in elections, evaluating, endorsing, and supporting candidates actively.

You won’t be surprised that we ran our MSSA Political Committee bank account down to near zero sending out these 19,000 postcards.

So, we’d love to have donations from you to MSSA PC to help rebuild this account for the November General Election. If you can help, you may mail a check to:

MSSA PC
P.O. Box 4924
Missoula, Montana 59806

Your check should be made payable to MSSA PC.

There are some rules:

No corporate checks: Although lawsuits have changed this landscape, we prefer no checks drawn on the account of a corporation. Personal checks please.

No limits; reporting info: There is no limit to the size of the check you are allowed to write, ALTHOUGH if it is $35 or more, we MUST report your Name, Address, Occupation and Employer. If your name and mail address is on your check, you can just write your occupation and employer in the memo blank.

Remember, MSSA is the most successful such entity in the U.S., and therefore probably in the World (they don’t have gun rights organizations at all in most countries). Since MSSA’s founding, we’ve now gotten 64 pro-gun and pro-hunting bills enacted into Montana law. For us to continue this level of success, we need your support for MSSA PC.

Thanks loads for whatever you can do.

Best wishes,

Gary Marbut, President

Has Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine Endorsed Angus King or Not?

It appears there’s much confusion in the last couple of days as to whether the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine is endorsing independent Angus King for the U.S. Senate or not. I was the recipient of an email that listed some exchanges and a photograph of what appears to be an endorsement of King by David Trahan, Executive Director of SAM. I’ll share those below, including the photo.

October 16, 2012 – The following email was sent to Becky at Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine:

Hi Becky, I received a political card from Angus King with an endorsement from SAM. I find it a little perplexing to learn that David Trahan, as Executive Director of a 14,000 member organization, is supporting an independent instead of a Republican for U.S. Senate when it is imperative to the survival of our country that we have a majority in the U.S. Senate so we can kick Harry Reid out of his majority leadership seat & get our country back under Mitt Romney.

Disappointed ___________

Assuming the above email went to a number of undisclosed recipients, here is a response to this topic by Rep. Jonathan McKane, House District 51:

Not true – SAM did not endorse Angus or any candidate. SAM said that all of the candidates were good candidates. It appears that Angus changed the quote.

And Rep. McKane posted the following news article which can be found in the Kennebec Journal for verification. The Kennebec Journal article is dated September 24, 2012:

Maine sportsman’s group endorses Courtney

September 24, 2012, 1:57 pm

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The largest hunting and fishing advocacy group in Maine is endorsing Republican Jon Courtney in the 1st Congressional District race, but isn’t endorsing anybody in the 2nd District or Senate races.

The Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine interviewed Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud and his 2nd District Republican challenger, Kevin Raye, as well as Republican Charlie Summers and independent Angus King in the Senate race.

SAM Executive Director David Trahan said the alliance’s board of directors decided that Michaud, Raye, Summers and King were all “friends” of the alliance and decided to not give an endorsement in those races.

For the 1st District race, the board endorsed GOP candidate Jon Courtney, who is running against Democratic incumbent Chellie Pingree. Trahan said Pingree did not respond to the alliance’s questionnaire.

In addition, on the 17th of October another email goes out asking someone, who’s name I will not show, to seek a retraction of the endorsement by SAM from Angus King, shown in the photo above.

______, please see attached PDF showing SAM endorsement of Angus King. David [Trahan] needs to have Angus do a retraction before the Nov. 6th election. The stakes are too high.

Sportsmen might like to know if, in fact, SAM or David Trahan personally, is endorsing Angus King for U.S. Senate. In addition, did Angus King take liberties with something Trahan might have said, and present it as an endorsement by SAM?

The photo shows other so-called “Outdoor Leader Endorsements”, that I take as personal endorsements, even though who each person might be affiliated with or represent is shown. The question becomes, is this shown endorsement an official endorsing of Angus King by the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine or is it a personal endorsement of David Trahan’s?…..or neither? I think clarification on this would be imperative heading into an election in less than 3 weeks.

Ted Nugent Endorses Mitt Romney

*Editor’s Note* The posting of this information is not an indication that I or anyone associated with the web site endorses the candidate Mitt Romney. This is being made available for the readers as information.

After much soul searching and due diligent research, I endorse Governor Mitt Romney to be the GOP nominee for president because I believe he is the best man to chart a course for renewed America prosperity.

I respect, admire and applaud all four candidates, but endorse Mitt.

Good government always begins with good people. Governor Romney is a good man, a self-made man, an independent man, a smart man. My kind of guy, a real all-American MotorCity Madman sans ponytail.

We live in brutal economic times. Tough times require tough people willing to make even tougher decisions. I only support tough, creative, smart and bold people, and Governor Romney is just the man America needs right now for these turbulent times and the even tougher times in front of us.

Too many Americans are unemployed and under-employed. Putting America back to work and restoring America’s economy is job #1. Governor Romney has the hands-on private sector experience that is critical to understanding how to ignite our economy and put Americans back to work. President Obama has no private sector experience and we have a stagnant, sinking economy to prove it.

Governor Romney knows that one of the key economic anchors drowning our economy is that we have too much government that consumes too much of our GDP. He knows the path to prosperity is not lined with more government, more bureaucracy, more borrowing and spending, more mountains of unsustainable debt, and more fiscal insanity such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac who amazingly are still making bad loans.

He understands the way forward is not more of the same disastrous policies and tremendously expensive programs that have pushed America to the brink of economic collapse. Under a Romney presidency, America will chart a much different course that begins with much less spending, lower taxes, and more accountability.

Governor Romney understands how the voluminous stacks of burdensome federal government regulations are suffocating the free market. Bureaucratic, anti-job regulations will become immediately extinct when Governor Romney becomes President Romney. The days of irresponsible, costly, unaccountable government will soon be a thing of the past.

Restoring basic fiscal sanity in a system that is addicted to irresponsible spending begins with banning earmarks across the board. President Romney will work to get the president line-item veto power and work to get a Balanced Budget Amendment.

Businesses will once again feel secure in investing and expanding their operations with a pro-business Romney Administration. If you want a job and a brighter future, Governor Romney is clearly the best choice to occupy the White House.

While becoming energy independent is difficult and will take time, President Romney will begin this journey by implementing a pragmatic energy policy that includes nuclear power, a Keystone pipeline, more off-shore drilling, and other real energy innovation and research and development.

As a tried and true conservationist, I know a President Romney will place the interests of the hunting and fishing community first and foremost over the current animal right’s terrorists infesting our government agencies. There will be zero pandering or tolerance of radical, leftist, clown-brigade environmentalists in a Romney White House.

Governor Romney is strong on national defense. Though a peaceful man, he knows that lasting peace is ultimately achieved through a position of strength. There will be no time tables to withdraw our warriors from the battlefield, only timetables for victory which will be established by our warriors.

There will be no apologizing for America to the international community by a President Romney, only praise for our freedom, our warriors, our culture, and our values. America will once again be respected on the international stage with President Romney at the helm.

During my heart to heart talk with the good Governor, I am convinced he better understands the inescapable truism of a God given individual right to keep and bear arms. No re-interpretation necessary.

There are stark and clear differences between Governor Romney and President Obama. This is good. Governor Romney believes the engine of America is the free market while President Obama believes in punishing the producers of the free market and growing an even larger federal government and legions of soulless dependents.

Governor Romney is clearly the best man for the job at hand. To restate President Reagan’s campaign theme of 1984, it will once again be morning in America with Mitt Romney in the White House.

Let’s rock, America.
