Alaska officials took a bold step yesterday in calling an emergency meeting to make a few changes and announce that the aerial hunt for wolves is back on and permits may be issued as soon as this Friday.

Judge Sharon Gleason had ruled that the Board of Game had not followed its own rugulations and therefore ruled the aerial hunt invalid. Opponents of the hunt, including a Connecticut based animal rights group, Friends of Animals, are saying that the move made by the Board of Game to re-institute the hunt, is illegal.

The reason for the call for aerial hunting of wolves is to reduce the wolf population as quickly as possible to save the moose population. Officials want to see the population shrunk by as much as 80% in specified areas totally approximately 500 wolves.
