Should Tennessee Approve Baiting Of Deer?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

That is the question that is going to be debated in upcoming meetings of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

Always a hot topic of discussion, baiting has been bantied around for many years. Opponents of baiting say there is an ethics issue that detracts from the sport and that baiting causes deer to gather in large numbers to feed at feed stations. Whenever wild animals gather in large numbers, the risk of spreading disease also rises.

Proponents say that it is a useful tool in deer management.

Several states, particularly in the southeast and out west allow baiting for deer to some degree. Tennessee has not but is getting pressure from some hunters and groups to open the practice up as part of the deer management program.

We’ll follow the debate and report on decisions.
