New Hampshire Fish And Game Out of Money
The director of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Lee E. Perry, explains to the citizens of the Granite State why there is no money.
It’s time for New Hampshire and many other states to restructure the budgets for fish and game. Demands are going up and revenue is going down. This is a bad combination. Fish and game departments across America need to return to what they were created to do – manage wildlife. That means moving some of the responsibilities dumped on these departments back to entities that can manage and fund them with general taxpayer’s dollars instead of on the backs of hunters and fishermen as it is mostly license fees that pay for the fish and game programs.
Fish and game departments can be self-supportive if states would stop asking them to do search and rescue, police snowmobiles and ATVs and now many are asked to be an arm of Homeland Security. All these programs belong in state and local law enforcement. Search and rescue should be funded mostly by those who require the services. If you are dumb enough to head off into the wilderness some place ill-prepaired, then you are dumb enough to pay to get rescued.
Fish and game cannot manage wildlife properly when asked to provide all these other public services without receiving funding from the general taxpayers. I favor restructuring over taking general taxation money because the more general tax dollars go into fish and game funding the more politics will play a role. There is already too much political influence into a world driven by science. Decisions should be made on science not on personal political affiliation.
