James Gillespie Blaine, known by some as the liar from Maine, participated in the attempted murder/shooting and subsequent cover-up of President James A. Garfield. Garfield, while recovering from bullet wounds was poisoned and died. He was succeeded by V.P. Chester A. Arthur. Blaine was then Secretary of State and remained in that position through June of 1892 under President Benjamin Harrison.
Blaine is memorialized in Maine, even naming the Governor’s Mansion the Blaine House.
