NRA’s LaPierre Responds to President’s Inaugural Address

01/22/2013

Thank you for that kind introduction. And thank you for your warm welcome.

Yesterday in his second inaugural address, President Barack Obama quoted the Declaration of Independence and he talked about “unalienable rights.” I would argue that his words make a mockery of both.

I’d like to talk to you about one line near the end of Barack Obama’s speech where he said, quote “We cannot mistake absolutism for principle.” Let me quote the president again: “We cannot mistake absolutism for principle.”

So what is this “absolutism” the president attacks? And what are the so-called “principles” that he wants us to settle for instead?

Obama wants to turn the idea of “absolutism” into a dirty word, just another word for “extremism.” He wants you to accept the idea of “principles” as he sees fit to define them. It’s a way of redefining words so that common sense is turned upside-down and nobody knows the difference.

Think about it. As families, when we’re broke and all our credit cards are maxed out, we’re forced to tighten our belts.

But when the government is broke and our bond rating is tumbling and the president wants more new social programs, borrowing more money is supposed to be “principled.” And anybody who questions that is a no-good “absolutist” — Obama code for extremist.

We as gun owners face the same kind of false ultimatum. We’re told that to stop insane killers, we must accept less freedom — less than the criminal class and political class keep for themselves.

We’re told that limits on magazine capacity or bans on 100-year-old firearms technology — bans that only affect lawful people — will somehow make us safer.

We’re told that wanting the same technology that the criminals and our leaders keep for themselves is a form of “absolutism” and that accepting less freedom and protection for ourselves is the only “principled” way to live.

Think about what that means. Barack Obama is saying that the only “principled” way to make children safe is to make lawful citizens less safe and violent criminals more safe.

Criminals couldn’t care less about Barack Obama’s so-called “principles”! They don’t have principles — that’s why they’re criminals.

Obama wants you to believe that putting the federal government in the middle of every firearm transaction — except those between criminals — will somehow make us safer.

That means forcing law-abiding people to fork over excessive fees to exercise their rights. Forcing parents to fill out forms to leave a family heirloom to a loved one — standing in line and filling out a bunch of bureaucratic paperwork, just so a grandfather can give a grandson a Christmas gift. He wants to put every private, personal transaction under the thumb of the federal government, and he wants to keep all those names in a massive federal registry.

There are only two reasons for that federal list of gun owners — to tax them or take them. And to anyone who says that’s excessive, Barack Obama says you’re an “absolutist.”

He doesn’t understand you. He doesn’t agree with the freedoms you cherish. If the only way he can force you to give ’em up is through scorn and ridicule, he’s more than willing to do it — even as he claims the moral high ground.

He said it yesterday! In the very same sentence that Obama talked about “absolutism” versus “principle,” he also scolded his critics for “name-calling,” as he called it.

He’s more than willing to demonize his opponents, silence his critics and slur the NRA — in the words of Senator Charles Schumer, as an “extremist fringe group.” And look at how he demonizes Republicans in Congress.

When Barack Obama says, “we cannot mistake absolutism for principle,” what he’s saying is that precision and clarity and exactness in language and law should be abandoned in favor of his nebulous, undefined “principles.”

I’ve got news for the president. Absolutes do exist. Words do have specific meaning, in language and in law. It’s the basis of all civilization. It’s why our laws are written down: So the “letter of the law” carries the force of the law.

That’s why our Bill of Rights was written into law, to ensure the fundamental freedoms of a minority could never be denied by a majority. Those are the principles we call unalienable rights.

Without those absolutes, without those protections, democracy decays into nothing more than two wolves and one lamb voting on what to eat for lunch. I urge our president to use caution when attacking clearly defined “absolutes” in favor of his “principles.”

Mister President, just because you wish words meant something other than what they mean, you don’t have the right to define them any way you want. Because when words can mean anything, they mean nothing.

When “absolutes” are abandoned for “principles,” the U.S. Constitution becomes a blank slate for anyone’s graffiti and our rights and freedoms are defaced.

Words do have meaning, Mister President. And those meanings are absolute, especially when it comes to our Bill of Rights.

Don’t take it from me. Take it from former Democratic U.S. Senator and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. Fifty years ago, after he had been appointed to the Supreme Court by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, liberal Justice Hugo Black said, and I quote: “There are ‘absolutes’ in our Bill of Rights, and they were put there on purpose by men who knew what words meant and meant their prohibitions to be ‘absolutes.'” End quote.

Let me read that again. “There are ‘absolutes’ in our Bill of Rights, and they were put there on purpose by men who knew what words meant and meant their prohibitions to be ‘absolutes.'”

Justice Black understood the danger of self-appointed arbiters of what “freedom” really means — like President Barack Obama — who want to redefine freedom, whittle away freedom and infringe upon the freedoms that we the people reserve to ourselves.

They’re God-given freedoms. They belong to us as our birthright. No government ever gave them to us and no government can ever take them away.

Mister President, you may not like that. You may wish it were some other way. But you can’t argue that it isn’t true.

In that, the American people are, and will always remain, utterly absolute! We are not people to be trivialized, marginalized or demonized as unreasonable. We’re not children who need to be parented or misguided “bitter clingers” to guns and religion.

We get up every day, we work hard to pay our taxes, we cherish our families and we care about their safety. We believe in living honorably, and living within our means.

We believe we deserve, and have every right to, the same level of freedom that our government leaders keep for themselves, and the same capabilities and same technologies that criminals use to prey upon us and our families. That means we believe in our right to defend ourselves and our families with semi-automatic technology.

We believe that if neither the criminal nor the political class is limited by magazine capacity, we shouldn’t be limited in our capacity either.

We believe in our country. We believe in our Bill of Rights. And we believe in our Second Amendment, all of our Second Amendment. Because we believe in the freedom and safety that it, and it alone, guarantees absolutely.

Mister President, you might think that calling us “absolutists” is a clever way of “name-calling” without using names. But if that is “absolutist,” then we are as “absolutist” as the Founding Fathers and framers of the Constitution … and we’re proud of it!

Thank you very much!

Over 200 Pull Out of Eastern Outdoor Expo

Reed Outdoor Exhibitions, the company sponsoring the Pennsylvania outdoor exposition in Harrisburg, Feb. 2-10 stands to suffer a huge loss as now over 200 vendors and celebrities have canceled their engagements at the show. Reed Outdoor Exhibitions banned the display and sale of, as well as images, of the “modern sporting rifle.” In protest, companies and individuals are cancelling, leaving Reed Exhibition high and dry, while Reed stating they refuse to give in.

Unless Reed Outdoor Exhibitions is an independently wealthy company that can stand to lose lots of money, one has to wonder who or what is really behind Reed’s stubbornness and willingness to lose the kind of money they face. Perhaps there is a George Soros-type investor who offered to pay Reed to do this. Who could be behind this display of anti-American gun heritage? In addition what future does Reed have by destroying the one aspect of the outdoor show that is the big draw? Ridiculous.

Squawking Like Chickens, Assault Guns Are Pulled Out of PA Gun Show

*Editor’s Note* The original posting of this notice wrongly accused Cabela’s of deciding not to sell assault weapons. It was the decision of the event organizers to prohibit the display and sale of such weapons and Cabela’s in return pulled out of the event in protest. My apologies.

Cabela’s has decided not to attend the largest Pennsylvania outdoor sports show because the event organizer opted to ban the sale and display of “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines.

NY Assemblyman Says Committee Considered Gun Confiscation

New York State Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin, in the video below, references that in discussions about the recent number of gun restrictions voted on and approved by the Assembly and signed by Governor Cuomo, discussed the confiscation of guns. I have also been told that McLaughlin posted a list on his Facebook page, also shown below, of items discussed but not included in the ban. I have not been able to find that list.

Note however that in the video, the reason given for not providing all the items considered by the committee was because it would really tick off a lot of people.

1. Confiscation of “assault weapons”
2. Confiscation o ten round clips
3. Statewide database for ALL Guns
4. Continue to allow pistol permit holder’s information to be replaced to the public
5. Label semiautomatic shotguns with more than 5 rounds or pistol grips as “assault weapons”
6. Limit the number of rounds in a magazine to 5 and confiscation and forfeiture of banned magazines
7. Limit possession to no more than two (2) magazines
8. Limit purchase of guns to one gun per person per month
9. Require re-licensing of all pistol permit owners
10. Require renewal of all pistol permits every five years
11. State issued pistol permits
12. Micro-stamping of all guns in New York State
13. Require licensing of all gun ammo dealers
14. Mandatory locking of guns at home
15. Fee for licensing, registering weapons

Tyrant Cuomo’s Gun Ban Doesn’t Exclude Police

This report is interesting on several levels. First, this media report is saying the law, as written, was a “big oversight.” Was it? If you do research you will find references to such things as: “The creation of an Arms Control and Disarmament Agency under P.L. 87-297 and described in State Department Paper 7727, along with the non-incorporation of the 2nd Amendment into the 14th Amendment protections against the states, indicates that our {their} criminal government will eventually declare martial law so that they can launch a “military enforcement action” to confiscate firearms from all law abiding citizens.”

Some are using this information to support the idea that Cuomo’s “big oversight” is part of a bigger plan to disarm citizens, police and military. However at the end of this video, the reporter states that an amendment will be forthcoming to change that.

A second issue is briefly talked about which in reminiscent of the Obama exemption tactics with Obamacare, tax increases, etc. The report states that a proposed amendment to Cuomo’s fascist gun laws will also include lifting these restrictions for retired police officers. And this is necessary because…..?

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think anyone should have such restrictions to gun ownership. This just, once again, shows the corruption and hypocrisy of tyrannical government that the citizens are squashed under foot, having their rights destroyed, while government personnel are allowed to exercise the rights they want to take away from everyone else.

It’s tyranny as warned about by the Founding Fathers.

Where Are Obama’s Executive Orders on Gun Control?

Yesterday, the White House released 23 proposals as to what President Obama intended to sign into law through Executive Order to restrict gun access and ownership, all in the name of child safety. Did he really sign executive orders yesterday as the press seems to indicate and we were led to believe at the president’s press conference? I don’t think so.

Some people actually believe that the release of the 23 ideas from the White House, was, in fact, THE 23 executive orders. They are not. This also shows the ignorance of the citizens and the press, or the deliberate misleading of the press and the White House.

So, if Mr. President signed into law 23 executive orders then where are they? It’s a regular occurrence for me to visit the White House web page where anybody can check any presidential-signed executive order and read the finer details. Find that web page right here and bookmark it.

As of this writing, those 23 executive orders have not been posted. What is remarkable is the reaction at all levels of the citizenry over these so-called and yet, non existent executive orders. We know the one sentence proposals the president wants to do with his executive powers but none of us have anything to judge exactly how he plans to carry out this overreach by him and his administration. It’s an overreach simply because he is attempting to make major changes to a constitutional amendment, a bill of right, by circumventing Congress and the power and scrutiny of the people. In other words, the president is seriously messing with our Constitution.

All sides of this issue are reacting in every way imaginable and to what? Why don’t they pressure the White House to post all the details of each of the 23 executives orders so that then we can know exactly how intrusive and unconstitutional his plans are?…..or maybe they are not. Only after we know the details can we stand in judgement of what is taking place.

But then again, perhaps it’s more about “ginning up” the masses than about the safety of children.

Obama Plans 23 EOs On Destruction of Second Amendment

The devil is in the details, as they say. Below is a list of 23 Executive Order ideas that President Obama intends to implement in his effort to avoid any scrutiny from the public or that of Congress. Many see this as an impeachable offense. However, it is imperative that I point out that this list only calls for an idea to be implemented and in no way tells us what the details of any or all executive orders would entail. While some “ideas” may seem plausible, even sound, we cannot and should not vote up or down until we see the details of each of the executive actions; and this will not happen until AFTER the EO has been signed by the president. Stand by.

1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.

8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

11. Nominate an ATF director.

12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.

13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.

18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.

23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

Tyrannical Obama/Biden To Use Executive Orders to Ban Guns

Quote from VP Joe Biden: “There are executives orders, there’s executive action that can be taken. We haven’t decided what that is yet. But we’re compiling it all with the help of the attorney general and the rest of the cabinet members as well as legislative action that we believe is required.”
