Silence, Please

It’s true. It has always been legal to possess silencers. Suppressors are regulated by the federal government, and each silencer must be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. It’s an expensive, exhaustive process. The application must be accompanied by fingerprints, photos, and a signed letter from a local law enforcement chief attesting that the applicant is legally qualified to own one. Anyone with a criminal history is ineligible. Oh, and the application must be accompanied by a $200 check, and it can take up to eight months for federal approval.
